To illustrate the impact, say a player has 17 against a dealer's five. The player wins if the dealer busts, pushes if the dealer gets 17, and loses on a dealer's 18 through 21. If the dealer hits soft 17, the probabilities for players are 41.91 percent to win, 11.81 percent to push, and 46.28 percent to lose. Most golfers loose their concentration when they start to focus on their score - whether good or bad. Focusing on score can make a golfer self-conscious, either technically or emotionally. You must stay in the present to maintain your concentration, and the most effective way of doing that is to develop a reliable pre-shot routine. For example, a table where the dealer hits soft 17 is worst for a player than if the dealer stands on soft 17. Blackjack players should know which rules are player-friendly and which favor the house, and then scout the tables to find the best set of player-friendly rules. Double soft 15 or 16 vs dealer 4-6. Double soft 17 or 18 vs dealer 3-6. Stand on hard 12 vs dealer 4-6. Stand on hard 13-16 vs dealer 2-6. Stand on hard 17 or more. Stand on soft 19 (A8) or more. Hit hard 11 or less. Hit soft 17 (A6) or less. Hit soft 18 (A7) vs dealer 9, 10 and Ace. IF DEALER HITS SOFT 17. Surrender 15, 88 and 17. It is in most of the casinos in AC. Also some of the electronic tables in Delaware have changed to the soft 17 rule. Gives the house another.05% edge or more. Casino Player Magazine just ran an article on this rule. We played a few weeks ago and all of Harrah's tables are mixed. Hilton had soft 17 tables. Trump Marina had mixed.
Ok math geniuses. Video poker jackpot winners. If the dealer were to hit soft 18, how would that affect the house edge?
Wizard made a YouTube video showing how to come up with basic strategy and house edge using Excel. Your best bet is to probably follow along on his video, making an excel spreadsheet (unless the entire thing is already made up for download), then edit the soft 18 part for dealer having to hit instead of stand. BTW it uses infinite decks, so although it's not 100% correct, it should be very darn close.sodawater

This rule would be good for the player and lessen the house edge.
dealers will always only go with one instruction, there's no composition-dependent decision ever. No casino is going to change this except as some special - it would be a weird promotion to choose, mystifying most players.
it's not in Wizard's list of special rules affecting HE

..If the dealer were to hit soft 18, how would that affect the house edge?
The infinite-deck model gives these player EVs, expressed as percent, for various combinations of dealer soft and hard standing numbers. (This is for a game with no surrender or re-splitting.)
You can see that the optimal strategy for the casino is to stand on soft 18 and hard 17. But hitting soft 18 wouldn't hurt the casino much at all.

.. Interac japan review. if the soft 18, hard 17 box is the lowest number (-0.79), wouldn't that be optimal house strategy?..
Yes--that's the right box. Dealer's standing on soft 18, meaning dealer hits all soft 17s (H17), gives the biggest edge (0.79%) for the house against perfect basic strategy by players. That's why so many casinos changed their rules from S17 (casino stands on soft 17) to H17.
